The totems

For every neighbourhood, the bee that belongs there.

Every BeeTotem is made for the wild bee that belongs in that neighbourhood or can return to it. Amsterdam has three, and a fourth is on the way. Outside the city there are totems in Leiden and in Raitenhaslach (Bavaria). The plan counts 104, one for every wild bee species in the city.

In short

What is a BeeTotem?

The totem from bottom to top: worms, planters, a drinking spot and, on top, the 3D print of a real bee. Next to it a bee hotel, and neighbours who care for it.

The network

Four of the 104 zones.

Amsterdam is divided into 104 zones, one for every wild bee species that lives here or could. Each dot is a zone. Filled means there is a totem, or one is on its way.

Schematic overview. The map of the zones follows.

A totem in your neighbourhood?

For now, no new totems are coming in Amsterdam. The first totems came through citizen initiatives such as Oost Begroot. That is where it stops, and we cannot help neighbourhoods raise money. We are looking for funding through national grants. Want to do something now? Adopt the bee of your neighbourhood or sign the bee covenant.
