3D scanning at TU Darmstadt
The Dutch natural history museum Naturalis in Leiden has generously provided us with the original specimens of the 104 wild bee species that occur in Amsterdam.
What is special about TU Darmstadt is that it has the most precise 3D microscopy equipment in Europe. To capture each specimen down to the smallest detail, as many as 28,000 photographs are taken, which form the basis for a hyper-realistic digital 3D image.
This digital file serves as a template for making a 3D print at a remarkable magnification of 12,000x, making an unprecedented level of precision and realism possible.

In brief
From museum bee to totem.
Naturalis’s collection box, 28,000 photographs at TU Darmstadt, and a 3D print made layer by layer: this is how a bee becomes the artwork on top of the totem.
From reading to planting.
Find the bee that belongs to your neighbourhood, and plant her flowers.
