RefuBees as part of a student intervention project

Surprisingly, scientific evidence confirms that urban environments are more favourable to bees than rural areas. This phenomenon is mainly due to soil and water pollution caused by the use of pesticides, monocultures and the destruction of habitats.

Bees have in essence become refugees in search of shelter and food. This dilemma was tackled both conceptually and practically at the 2014 BeeCare symposium entitled ‘The Inner City as Nature Reserve’, attended by experts in ecology, sociology and politics. To prevent the extinction of various wild bee species, a collective understanding that sees bees as refugees in need of food and shelter is crucial: the RefuBee initiative.

Together with a group of students from the HKU (Utrecht University of the Arts) we worked on an intervention in public space, which took place here on a public square in an Amsterdam neighbourhood.

From reading to planting.

Find the bee that belongs to your neighbourhood, and plant her flowers.
